Obama Picks Up Another Mississippi Superdelegate

Carnelia Fondren commits to Obama

Carnelia Fondren, vice chair of the Mississippi Democratic Party and one of Mississippi’s seven “superdelegates” to the Democratic National Convention, announced her support for presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama. Fondren released the following statement today:

“Sen. Hillary Clinton is one of the greatest political leaders of our time. This is a special and exciting time to be a woman in politics. I, as well as other Mississippians, am extremely proud of what she has accomplished,” Fondren said.

“Sen. Clinton has run an honorable, impressive campaign and has discussed in-depth her vision for the future of our country. I am especially grateful that Sen. Clinton made it a point to include Mississippi in her campaign schedule, giving our residents a good look at her plans and agenda.

“But the people of our state and this country have spoken. And they have chosen to support Sen. Barack Obama, an equally impressive presidential candidate. Sen. Obama is a dynamic leader who offers a compelling vision for the future of our nation and the state of Mississippi.

“Sen. Obama’s campaign style, his honesty and his ability to connect with the people of this country give us a great opportunity to win back the presidency. The people of our country have spoken and shown they support Sen. Obama – now it’s time for party leaders to unite behind one candidate and head toward victory in November.”

Wayne Dowdy Decides

Mississippi Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Dowdy has made his superdelegate decision...

Dowdy told The Associated Press he made his decision Wednesday after becoming convinced Obama has enough support to secure the nomination. Dowdy said he hopes Clinton is chosen for vice president.

Mississippi has seven Democrat superdelegates.

Johnnie Patton of Jackson, Everett Sanders of Natchez and Congressman Bennie Thompson are committed to Obama.

Those still uncommitted are state party Vice Chairwoman Carnelia Pettis-Fondren of Oxford and congressmen Gene Taylor and Travis Childers.
