This race in north Mississippi is going to be a wang dang doodle. We as Mississippians really need Travis Childers in this seat. While I wish Travis had voted for the passage of Health Care Reform, I am in agreement with a large chunk of his votes. Alan Nunneleee would likely never make a vote I would agree with. A vote for Nunnelee is a vote to go backwards. Please join Cotton Mouth is supporting Travis.

Folks this race is getting serious. We are now less than four months away from election day. Former Governor Ronnie Musgrove has an opportunity to break preconceived beltway notions regarding the political leanings of this state. Poll after poll has Musgrove tied with replacement Senator Roger Wicker. Roger Wicker was appointed by our politically fading governor. North Mississippi thought so much of Wicker and the GOP they gave us Travis Childers in the special election to replace the seat vacated by Wicker.

This is not the time to sit on your hands and wait on others to save the day. There is no doubt the DSCC will be here with sacks of loot for political ads. That alone will not be sufficient. We have to show not only Roger Wicker, but our national party that we stand for change alongside Ronnie Musgrove.

Here are the latest Cash on Hand totals for the two contestants per Swing State Project:

Roger Wicker - - $2,953,000
Ronnie Musgrove - - $716,000

You can thank George W. Bush for $500,000 of that total according to reports. This is truly sad folks. We have a viable Democratic candidate for Senate that should win. Match these two up with even funding numbers and Roger Wicker is moving back to Lee County.

Here we are on June 24, one week before the end of the fiscal quarter. In the world of political campaigns the end of the quarter is a big deal. Campaign finance reports are due for the last three months. The more money Musgrove raises in Mississippi, the more support he will be able to get out of the Democratic establishment. Ronnie is making a push this week to raise the most money he can before the deadline. Let's help him out all we can.

Roger Wicker is raising money by the truckload. A large portion of Wicker's money is coming from all the special interests he represents. As we noted in this article, Roger has a way of rewarding those donors with fat government contracts.

Keep our eye on the prize

We have whooped it up in celebration of Travis Childer's big win. The time has come to put that behind us and look to the fall. We need to make sure that we do our part to help raise money for November. The Republicans are not going to roll over and play dead. I set our goals for $5,000 for both the Senate race and the MS-01 race. The money already raised will count towards the goal. This is not about Cotton Mouth but about all of us helping to build a new progressive majority in Mississippi.

The new poll has Ronnie Musgrove in a statistical dead heat, while Travis Childers is set to re-climb the mountain up north. We cannot afford to relax. We have them on the run, let's finish the job.

While everyone is still feeling good from the big win last night, let's turn our attention to November where we can shock the country again by electing a Democrat Senator. Ronnie Musgrove helped bring us the MAEP as governor, the single most important piece of legislation since William Winter was in office. Roger Wicker is a an empty suit who wants to bring his king of pork politics to the Senate floor. Let's give what we can to Ronnie to help get this ball rolling. Small donations are great, since we have a until November. Big donations rule.

MS-01 Childers Campaign: Money still needed

Yesterday's big push it turns out was for a media buy. I asked a contact in the campaign if they would still be able to use the funds we raise today forward. After checking, I was told emphatically yes. So don't believe a word I said about it ending at midnight. We can still reach our goal.

UPDATE: (From CM poster Mitch) Not to muddy the waters, or to take away from CM's efforts, but today, David NYC at Swing State project will be matching donations (to a limit) to Childers. SO if today you can give $25, you'll really be giving $50, which means then you can give the other $25 you saved through the CM page.

Travis Childers Event in Jackson Report

After work I headed down to Schimmel's in the Fondren business district for a fund raiser for Travis Childers. In attendance were William Winter, Ronnie Musgrove, Ronnie Shows, Wayne Dowdy, Jim Hood, and Steve Holland among many others. We enjoyed appetizers and a cash bar for about an hour before Mr. Childers spoke. He talked about how he lost his father at the age of 16 and had to take a job to help his mother pay the mortgage and bills. He understands the plight of the working class and promises to fight for them when he gets to Washington. He has me on board and I can't vote for him, but I can try to help him raise money.

Polls show that Travis is neck and neck with the Republican nominee Greg Davis for the MS-1 congressional seat. If you have any money to spare, please send a little to the Childers for Congress campaign. His opponent outspent him 2-1 in the primary. In a tight race we cannot afford to let Haley's bunch outspend us out of a very winnable seat. It looks as if the Republicans are trying to wage a duel-pronged attack. By leaving all names on the special election ballot, even those who have already lost, they are waging a war of financial attrition. The GOP has much deeper pockets, and they hope to see the Democratic well run dry. The second prong of attack will be that of smear, the old Republican standby.

Perhaps the best part of the event for came at the beginning, when I met William Winter. He is a true visionary who understands what it will take to move Mississippi forward. I overheard him talking to several others when he lamented "When will the average Mississippian stop voting against their own economic interests?" No truer words have ever been spoken.

I feel like I should preface this, so I will. I am absolutely committed to electing Democrats and am a staunch believer in our party. However, Cottonmouth is not officially affiliated with the Mississippi Democratic Party or any democratic candidate or campaign. I personally post a lot of things which they probably find distasteful. Like saying Franks' tax pledge is bad strategy and that you can't out Christian a Republican. I intend to keep saying those things. Part of learning, growing, and adapting to changing political circumstances is having a discussion about mistakes and recognizing them as such. Cottonmouth can't be a reputable thing with the influence we intend for it to have if we aren't able to be honest that way.

All of that is to say that we're not in any sense "bought and paid for".

However, Wendi Hooks asked me to post this. Wendi is a fantastic talent to have around and we're lucky to have her. She's also one of the best hostesses I've ever known. She knows how to make the chocolate fondue fountain run continuously without getting clogged. Like I said, she's a fantastic talent.

It has the added benefit of helping elect democratic majorities, which happens to be the thing that I am personally and professionally devoted to.
