The Obama Campaign is gearing up in Mississippi. For those in the Hattiesburg area, below is the latest event.

Official representatives from the Obama campaign and the Young Democrats of Mississippi will be in Hattiesburg to talk about voter registration.

Saturday, August 9th at 1:00pm
at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center, 220 W Front Street , Downtown Hattiesburg

A Different "Perkins Plan"

By now you've likely heard of the Pickens Plan for beginning to gain energy independence. (It's linked at the bottom of the left column)

Going through some of my old papers I happened upon some documents from an old Mississippi Young Democrats convention in whichever year was the last year Robert Hooks was elected to serve a term.

His opponent for President of the the Mississippi Young Democrats was Sean B. Perkins from Jackson and Perkins came ready and organized.

He handed out copies of news articles that he appeared in and a blue handout titled "The Perkins Plan!" (yes it did have the explanation mark)

Here are the first three points of the plan:

1. Develope a two-year Strategic Plan that provides Goals, Objectives, Action Steps and Timelines so that we can have a clear-cut plan as to what we, as Young Democrats, want to accomplish.

2. Implement a Mentor/Protege relationship for all Young Democrats who are interested in running for public office in the future. Mentors will either be Elected Officials, Former Elected Officials or Active persons in the Democratic Party.

3. Adopt a Community Service Project for the State Chapter of Young Democrats and encourage all Young Democrat Chapters to get involved in their communities by volunteering to a worth cause. We are the Party of the People!

That's A Lot of Unnecessary Capitalization. ;)

I hope swift boater T. Boone Pickens has better luck with his energy plan than Perkins did at implementing his.

College Democrats speak up in MS-01

The College Democrats chapter at Ole Miss has been very active in the MS-01 race. Below is an excerpt from Jesse Johnson's "Head to Head" column on why you should vote for Childers.

Great job, Jesse!

Obviously, the economy has been the central issue on this campaign. Childers wants to pay off the national debt, stabilize the national currency and return confidence to the lending markets.

What's Davis' plan for the economy? Extend the Bush tax cuts. Someone out there give me a Lil' Jon-style "What?!" That's right. He wants to continue the outdated economic policy of slash-and-spend that is breaking the back of our economy.

With the soaring costs of food, fuel and utilities, we cannot afford to have our national government operate financially the way it has for the past seven years. For many families, the worst time of the week is when they sit down and try to figure out how to pay bills.

The problems have gotten so bad that it's hard to tell the cause from the effect. At one forum, Childers said, "I've got enough money in my pocket. We need to stop the roundabout ways of taking it out of yours."

That statement probably seemed innocuous to many, but in this dire national economic situation, it was code for "I get it." Childers knows we can't sustain the heavy spending without the revenue that would have come from the few, rather than the consequences that are being paid by the many.

Mayor Davis was born, raised and educated in Mississippi and, if elected, will go to Washington and work hard to protect the values and interests of the citizens of North Mississippi. He will fight to control spending, keep taxes low, promote the family values important to Mississippians, guarantee that our troops are getting the supplies they so desperately need, and he will advocate to protect our borders.
