Updated (Again): Howard Dean Will Make Stops In Hattiesburg And Jackson Friday (With Details)

Associated Press:
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean is embarking on a voter registration bus tour he hopes will help push Dixie to the Democrats.

Dean's trip begins Thursday in President Bush's hometown of Crawford, Texas, riding an eye-catching bus wrapped in the red, white and blue of presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign logo.

...

But Obama is competing more aggressively in some states than others. His spending on advertising is an indication of where he thinks he has the best chance of winning, and the Southern states on the list at this point are Georgia, Missouri, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia.

"The key is going to be registering people to vote," Dean said.

Dean said the voter registration drive is focused on boosting Obama's standing in the states, but local candidates will join the tour when it comes their way and he hopes it can help them, too.

The Schedule:

_ A drive from Crawford to Austin on Thursday.

_ Stops Friday in New Orleans and the Mississippi cities of Hattiesburg and Jackson.

_ Visits to the Louisiana cities of Shreveport and Baton Rouge on Saturday.

Thanks to Talking Points Memo for spotting this.

Locations and Times

Jackson:
- 6:00 pm at Tougaloo College at Woodworth Chapel at 500 County Line Road
- The event is free.

Hattiesburg: (location changed)
- Ebenezer Baptist Church at 2:45 pm.
- The event is free.

From the Mississippi Democratic Party:
The Mississippi Democratic Party will host a fundraising reception with Governor Howard Dean on Friday, July 18, 5:00 PM at Tougaloo College. We are asking for a $250 donation for the reception.

I really like Hillary Clinton* (Clinton Event In Hattiesburg)

Hillary Clinton is amazing to see in person.

I've heard that her natural charisma can fill a room, though doesn't seem to translate often onto television.

I'm dog tired, but I'll get all the pictures and video from this morning and yesterday up tonight.

* I'm also a really big fan of Obama

Which Clinton is Touring The State Friday?

While we and other media outlets reported that Bill Clinton will be touring the state Friday, a hunch and an unconfirmed source tell me that it may be both Bill and Hillary or Hillary instead. As always, we'll keep you updated (and continue breaking news before the big boys).

More Original Reporting To Come This Week

I will be at the Jefferson Jackson Hamer Dinner with a photographer.

I'll get up my own observations tonight.

One of our other writers will also be there so he will provide another perspective.

I'll also be attending the Bill Clinton event in Hattiesburg.

I intend to post video of both early Friday afternoon.

What Gene Taylor Had To Say At USM Tonight

He started with about 40 minutes about much of what he's doing or has recently done:

- He championed passage of healthcare for reservists.
- He got up armored humvees passed and got new blast resistant (v bottom) humvees over to Iraq.
- He got jammers placed on humvees to help stop IEDs.
- He brings home cooking (shrimp and gumbo) to the troops.
- He got dredge material to be used to create marshes.
- He got concrete from bridges to be used for artificial reefs which help the sea-life and fishermen.
- A whole lot more.

He said a lot in response to questions and I'll try to get more of that up soon.

I've said many times before that I disagree with Congressman Taylor often, but I also always say that I respect him immensely.

Fun facts he mentioned include that he gets far more mail when the weather is bad and he gets about 70% of his e-mail from the American Family Association and its members. He estimated they got over one thousand e-mails after the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" and said he gets mail from folks complaining about other elected officials (particularly the Clintons) and the folks say they're sending him the notes because "they" won't read them. Why should Gene?

I forgot that Gene Taylor always asks folks to give their name and hometown, so I'll have to edit that out (for folks' privacy) before I post any video.

Gene declined to endorse any candidate stateing that he'll support the candidate who comes closest to his position on insurance. He did point out that McCain has already come out opposed to the plan, so he's waiting to see how Obama and Clinton vote in an expected Senate vote on the Multi Peril Insurance issue.

Yes We Can: Barack Obama Is Contesting Mississippi

First they sent staff to Mississippi a little over a week ago.

Now they have an office in Jackson and plans to open short term offices across the state (donated space for about a week).

They've had organizational meetings in Jackson, Starkville, Hattiesburg and Biloxi. By the reports I received from folks at these meetings all had huge turnout (over 100 with no candidate present).

He's got a radio ad on that several folks have told me about and this TV ad is on broadcast networks around the state:

There is still no sign of a Clinton campaign presence.

Yes We Can.

The Musgrove Announcement Tour

He began the day in Tupelo at Johnnie's Drive-In.

Will Bardwell reports his firsthand experience from there and gives some opinion on the early themes Musgrove appears to be focusing on
The Daily Journal also reports on the major themes and details some of Musgrove's attacks on Representative Wicker

Soon he stopped in Jackson generating more press:

WJTV's Coverage
Natalie Chandler for the Clarion Ledger
WLBT's Coverage
WAPT's Coverage

Next he spoke in Hattiesburg and The Hattiesburg American covered it.

Finally he made his last stop for the day in Gulfport where:

He generated coverage for the 5,6, and 10 o'clock news with WLOX's Jeff Lawson and made it onto Cotton Mouth blog.

Above are former Governor Ronnie Musgrove and WLOX's Jeff Lawson

Update: I almost forgot to include a Daily Kos post on his announcement also.

"kos" mentions that Musgrove has a son (stepson) in Iraq and then says this:
And don't worry, the less we like him around these parts, the better it's for him in Mississippi. There's a reason he took a gratuitous swipe against California and New York in his speech. The best way for us to help win that seat is to hate on Musgrove, and I'm sure he'll oblige plenty in the coming 11 months.

I actually told a couple of Musgrove's people about the comment and they agreed and were happy to hear it.

Governor Ronnie Musgrove's Announcement

Musgrove Declares Candidacy for U.S. Senate
“We Need a Senator Determined to Change
The Washington Way of Doing Things.”

Former Governor Ronnie Musgrove announced his candidacy today for the Mississippi U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Trent Lott. “There is a complete disconnect between what they argue about in Washington and what people worry about at home,” said Musgrove.

In a series of events in Tupelo, Jackson, Hattiesburg and Gulfport, Musgrove strongly condemned the fiscal and economic policies of Congress, including “the deficit spending, the pork barrel earmarks, the spending money they don’t have and wasting the money they do have.”

“Congress has spent years turning a blind eye to illegal immigration and a deaf ear to the economic fears of the middle class,” continued Musgrove. “Our national debt is weakening our position in the world and bankrupting what we can do here at home. And on top of all that, we’re losing jobs to countries overseas and are on the verge of a recession.”

Musgrove drew contrasts with interim senator Roger Wicker, pointing out how Wicker has voted repeatedly in Congress against pay-as-you-go budgeting and in favor of raising the national debt limit, increasing the deficit, and for billions of dollars in special interest pork. Musgrove singled out Wicker’s support of earmarks like the $400 million “Bridge to Nowhere” in Alaska, and other “national priorities like another concert hall in New York, a National Mule and Packers Museum in California and a Prison Museum in Kansas.”

“Mr. Wicker,” said Musgrove, “don’t tell us you had to vote for all of this nonsense in order to bring our share of pork home. Saying that ‘everyone else does it’ isn’t good enough anymore.”

Musgrove drew other contrasts with Wicker, citing Wicker’s votes for weaker penalties for hiring illegal aliens and for voting five times against funding for tougher border security. “Roger Wicker will spend your tax dollars on a mule museum but not on more border guards. If that doesn’t say something about his priorities, then I don’t know what will.”

“When you get failing grades from the National Taxpayers Union and the Club for Growth,” continued Musgrove, “you have no business calling yourself a fiscal conservative. And sending sugar plums to New York and California doesn’t sound very Mississippi to me.”

Citing his experience as a governor who balanced every budget and cut state spending rather than raise taxes, Musgrove declared “I’ll vote against the Democrats when I think they’re wrong, and I’ll vote with the Republicans when I think it’s best for Mississippi. But the most important thing is this -- if we’re going to get this country back on sound footing, we’ll need a senator who knows how to say no.”

Referring to his years as governor, Musgrove said “Our spending was smart, our economy was growing, we were investing in education and we were attracting jobs and investment. We did it by working across political lines and watching the bottom line. That’s the kind of federal government this country needs and this state deserves. And that leadership and example has to start in Washington.”

Our Governor's Misplaced Priorities

Hattiesburg American Columnist Joe Atkins takes Barbour to task for being ready to spend mega-millions on multi-national corporations, but not on pressing needs.
State revenues are up - some 12.7 percent for the first half of the 2007 budget year - so why not give that money to big, profitable corporations instead of the people of Mississippi? It's not a point you're likely to hear made on the campaign trail. No matter. Actions speak louder than words anyway.

Mississippi's revenues are up, yet its mental health centers went under-funded by an estimated $20 million this year. Gulf Coast residents are still struggling nearly two years after Hurricane Katrina. Every year public education officials have to beg for cash. By the way, weren't gambling casinos supposed to solve our public education woes?

Mississippi has always prided itself on being the most Southern of states. However, what's so "Southern" about a state whose political leaders refuse to reform a tax code that punishes the poor and rewards the rich? Even Alabama last year approved a long-overdue cut in its taxes on the poor, raising the threshold in which a family of four begins paying income taxes from $4,600 to $12,500. Arkansas recently agreed to cut its sales tax on groceries from 6 to 3 percent.

It is entirely irresponsible to buy into the extortion system of attracting big employeers. Most job growth comes from new independent businesses while large ones just consolidate in one place. Money would be far better spent creating platforms for Mississippians to sell their goods in the broader market and helping to educate folks so that they can be good employees or start their own businesses.

Drink Liberally Thursday in Hattiesburg

South Mississippi liberals have the opportunity to spend the evening with someone other than the conservative in-laws.

The Hattiesburg Drinking Liberally Chapter meets Thursday, May 24th, 5:30 - 7:30 at the Keg & Barrel. The Keg & Barrel is located on Hardy St. east of Hwy 49.

So what is Drinking Liberally you ask?
An informal, inclusive progressive social group. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics.

Bars are democratic spaces - you talk to strangers, you share booths, you feel the bond of common ground. Bring democratic discourse to your local democratic space - build democracy one drink at a time.

While drinking liberally, always remember to drink responsibly, and make liberal use of designated drivers. Drinking and driving is reckless and irresponsible, like a neocon war or corporatist tax cut. Liberals, don't do it.
