I disagree with the gun positions of both candidates, but here is the Eaves Campaign's rather good response to the NRA endorsement of Haley:
EAVES HAS “A” RATING FROM NRA
Democratic candidate for Governor John Eaves has an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, but unlike his opponent Eaves cleaned and skinned four deer last hunting season.
“I let my boys pull the trigger but then I did all the work,” said Eaves. “I’ve spent more than thirty years in duck blinds and deer stands and one of my biggest joys in life has been passing on that tradition to my four boys. I think we’ve got enough gun laws on the books and as Governor’s I’ll fight to protect our 2nd Amendment rights every day.”
Governor Haley Barbour received the endorsement of the NRA today, but it’s unclear when Barbour last fired a gun.
“I’ll bet Barbour has to rent guns when he goes out tame bird hunting with his good pal Giuliani, who as Mayor of New York City sued gun manufactures and infringed on people’s right to bear arms,” said Sharon Garrison, spokeswoman for Eaves. “If you measure a man by the company he keeps, Barbour and Giuliani could be the Laverne and Shirley of gun control.”
Eaves also said that as Governor he would fight to protect the rights of property owners, who under Barbour’s administration have seen rollbacks in their ability to hunt on their own land. For example, Jackson County passed an ordinance forbidding individuals from discharging a firearm on any tract of land less than ten acres in size.
Eaves said he strongly supports the mission of the NRA but touted the support of several Mississippi hunting organizations, promising to support their interests first.
“I don’t care who Barbour brings down from D.C., whether it’s Giuliani or all the friends from his lobbying firm,” continued Eaves. “If Giuliani gets elected President, gun owners ought to be shaking in their boots. I’ll serve the people of Mississippi and no one else.”
Eaves is an avid gun collector with over 30 guns he regularly uses for sport and hunting, ranging from the 16 gauge his grandfather gave him to his Colt AR 15. John has a lifetime gun license, and an extensive list of his collection follows.

Jesus. The man owns an arsenal. When the commies do attack, ( and I hope they hurry up. Been waiting my whole life) I'm holing up at John Arthur's.
ReplyDeleteThat's actually very disconcerting.
I guess I found something I have in common with Eaves- a Remington 270.
ReplyDelete1. That photograph of Giuliani was taken at an AIDS fundraiser he attended while serving as mayor. He should be proud of his work in that regard.
ReplyDelete2. If that photograph and the "Laverne and Shirley" remark were part of the original press release, then it's one more instance where Eaves really should be ashamed of himself.
3. It wasn't an A; it was an A+. Bill Richardson holds the same score.
Whoops--I thought Eaves was saying Barbour had an "A" rating. I stand corrected on that point.
ReplyDeleteThe "Laverne and Shirley"/photo business are still disgustingly homophobic, though.
If Republicans can attack Democrats for appearing at a union event, surely Democrats can point out that a close ally of the Governor has a history of wearing drag. (I believe he did so every year he was mayor.)

Bill Richardson isn't my favorite Democrat. He's good, but my favorite is Senator Dodd. We'll see if he goes anywhere.
What is a lifetime gun license? Shouldn't that be lifetime hunting license? In Mississippi, your carry permit expires every four years. FFL's have to be renewed. Is Eaves 007 with a license to kill?
ReplyDeleteThe sad part about this election and the Lt. Gov's race is that it has become a "I'm a bigger/better ____ than you." Eaves is a bigger/better Christian, hunter, father, husband, etc... than Barbour. Ideology and platforms don't seem to be the focus. Oh well, my grandmother can jump higher than your grandmother, Leek. She can even run a little bit faster....
"Oh well, my grandmother can jump higher than your grandmother, Leek. She can even run a little bit faster...."
ReplyDeleteI'd bet you are right. She doesn't walk unassisted.
I have no idea who your grandmother is. The point of my post is that the issues being discussed are not really relevant to making Mississippi a better place.
ReplyDeleteDidn't mean to offend.
You didn't offend.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually funny to think of Air Grandma.
Unions are an ideology issue. Appearing in drag at an AIDS fundraiser isn't an ideology issue, unless someone is actually making a pro-AIDS argument; it's a homophobia issue. Why else, other than homophobia, would anyone care that Giuliani has appeared in drag, as mayor of New York City, to raise funds for AIDS research and treatment? That tells me a lot about Giuliani, and the fact that Eaves thinks it's scandalous tells me a lot about him.
ReplyDeleteRe the national race, I've written some profiles. Dodd has a lot to recommend him; Obama received my personal endorsement some months back; Richardson won my "best civil liberties candidate" designation. In practice, I flip flop back and forth between Obama and Richardson. Both have considerable strengths and weaknesses.
John Arthur seems to be a nutcase social conservative and a fiscal liberal. Not good for Mississippi. Barbour appears to be a moderate social conservative (at least compared to Eaves) and a fiscal conservative. Much better for Mississippi.
