Xenophobia at the Capitol

JT and Dave, two talk radio personalities, had an all-call to the Capitol yesterday to show support for several anti-immigrant bills floating in the legislature this year. Wearing bright yellow stickers that said "STOP ILLEGALS," they listened to their fearless leader, Phil Bryant (a favorite of JT and Dave) and trolled the halls of the Capitol.

From Clarion Ledger article (visit the website for photos):

"This is a homeland security issue, a jobs issue, an education issue," Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said after speaking to a group of more than 100 Mississippians at the Capitol on Tuesday.

The group urged lawmakers to consider the legislation. Addressing illegal immigration was one of Bryant's campaign promises.

Jerry Jones of Sandhill, who wore a "STOP ILLEGALS" sticker in the crowd, said she's "not aware of an influx" but that "it's only a matter of time."

"We have to get a handle on this, or eventually it is going to collapse the nation," said Bryant, who as state auditor had audits conducted to gauge the effect on taxpayers.

"We have to get a handle on this, or eventually it is going to collapse the nation," said Bryant, who as state auditor had audits conducted to gauge the effect on taxpayers.

From the Sun-Herald:

Several people said they went to the anti-immigration rally because they're worried about the security of the country. Among them was Charity Hohm-Whaley of Vicksburg, a nurse who said she believes people who slipped across the border are now filling the Mississippi schools and getting taxpayer-subsidized health care.

"We want our legislators to know we want them to stand up for us, not for the illegals," said Hohm-Whaley, who brought her four home-schooled children to the Capitol for their civics lesson. She and the children - ages 16, 13, 11 and 6 - wore the yellow stickers, as did a baby doll her youngest daughter pushed in a toy stroller.

Derrick Johnson, state president of the NAACP, leaned against the scrolled iron balustrade of the Capitol's fourth floor and shook his head as dozens of people - all white - walked past him wearing the large yellow stickers with the slogan: "Stop Illegals."

"I can't help but think that 40 years ago, those stickers would have said, 'Stop n-----s,' " Johnson told a reporter and a small group of people.

  1. Yes sir. Racism raises its ugly head. I was disappointed that JAE used a hard-right immigration stand during the campaign, but Republicans were uniformly against the immigrants.

"We don't like your kind here." You can almost hear it.

  2. Racism has nothing to do with it. I don't care what color the skin of an illegal is, I don't want them here illegally. What part of ILLEGAL do you people NOT understand?

  5. I don't know what the correct answer is the immigration question. But when I see the xenophobes out in full force, I find myslef on the opposite side from them, whatever that may be.

The right has always warned of the downfall of America. Once it was the n____s, then it was the communists, and now we hear that it is the gays, immigrants, and Muslims who threaten our society. Hate and fear will never depart from the righht-wing mantra.

  6. Do you like how your tax money is currently being spent? Do you approve of immigration rights groups spying on honest American's? If a tax payer is upset because John McCain and his ilk want to provide aliens health care, social security, etc., upset working people can't get decent wages, we are racist? Is this the only feeble nonsensical argument out there? Do you support hate crime legislation offered by Bennie Thompson to aid LaRaza and The Southern Poverty Law Center? If you want to be a part of that group, fine. Do you want to throw in with the homosexuals too? The Sodom and Gomorrah deal will be banned from church service. What is that word? HOMOPHOBIA, it is next. Calling people names just like when we were kids. White people that go to church better shut up. JT and Dave offer a window into secret house proceedings, give us news and info banned by the clarion ledger. Previously we had to know a rich trial lawyer to find out how they were doling out money. Did you know rich trial lawyers put Bennie in office? Astute country trial lawyers governing=silence of the lambs. We are sheep, bamboozled and okey doked to death.

  8. Some of us are missing the point of the post. The point is not about illegal immigrants/undocument workers and whether or not they should be here-obviously, there are laws that should be followed.

The point is the rhetoric and treatment directed towards Latinos in this state. For instance, legal immigrants are having their homes and businesses violently raided just because they are Latino. They are being pulled over on the interstate, just for being Latino.

If you don't think this is a problem, open a history book and read what was happening here 40 years ago.

  9. I remember white kids being put on a bus to a new school. I remember the riot, guns aimed at innocent white children who had never been exposed to hatred before. Mama and daddy didn't tell me they wanted to kill us. I didn't ask for the government to help me, my home was destroyed by a tornado that left me homeless, the government didn't help us, The govt. told people to spy in the grocery store and turn in parents spanking children, Clinton gave us Donna Shalayla and the banana, I don't expect the govt. to help me now. If my children want to be homosexual I know I can count on taxpayer money being well spent. Make illegal aliens pick cotton. Hard work, low pay, whatever.

  11. Good post, John.

I would go a step further and say that in most statewide and multi-county races, the Republican was, in fact, better on immigration than the Democrat. The gubernatorial race is only one example. The two lowest MFIRE scores--i.e., most pro-immigrant responses--were by Charles Barbour and Delbert Hosemann, in that order.

The lieutenant governor's race broke from this pattern in that, while both Bryant and Franks had attacked immigrants, Bryant had made more of an issue of it--and of course authored the bogus auditor's report "documenting" (i.e., speculating about) the effect of immigration on the state economy. Bryant was probably slightly worse on immigration than Franks, but they were both so hard-right on the issue that it was hard to really tell.

  12. Mississippi does not have an illegal immigrant problem.

This issue is so laughable, that when I hear people around here bring it up, I ask them "do you actually see that many Latinos around? Or do you think you do?"

This is just another way for the Republican party to put real Mississippi issues, such as health care and education FAR FAR AWAY from the public concern.

How about instead of "Stop Illegals", they say "Stop Dropouts"?

Because how could they hate then?

  13. The part that drives me nuts is that "There aren't even that many Latinos in Mississippi"--something I've said myself--is actually one of the more effective arguments against the anti-immigration folks. Because it's understood that the problem is Latinos, not adherence to seldom-enforced immigration paperwork requirements.

There ARE a growing number of Latinos in Mississippi, and my experience has been that most of them are legal. I used to usher at a Spanish service every Sunday, and the stories most first-generation and even many second-generation immigrants had to tell were really, really inspiring.

I wonder how many of those folks get dirty looks from the folks who made up the angry mob at the Capitol when they're out grocery shopping, or spending time with their kids, or what have you. The FBI reports that hate crimes against Latinos went up 35% between 2003 and 2007; the FBI didn't distinguish between victims who were "legal" or "illegal," and I'm betting the assailants probably didn't either.

A man suspected of being an illegal alien is facing charges he left the scene of a fatal accident after the vehicle he was driving hit a motorcycle on a Mississippi road and killed two people.

    Snip>

Garcia's connection to the crash drew criticism when it became known that Gulfport police had arrested him less than a week before on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge.

Police said Garcia didn't have a driver's license and they had no way of knowing his legal status within the United States. His own lawyer said he wasn't sure of Garcia's status.

It's just the latest in a long list of cases on which WND has reported involving illegal immigrants who have not only ignored U.S. immigration laws, but state laws against drinking and driving as well, killing innocents on the highways in the process, including:
