Cochran Still Undecided / Will Decide This Year

The Daily Journal:
U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., said Thursday he has not decided if he will run for a sixth term in 2008 but will make an announcement in "a few weeks."

Cochran, in a telephone interview with the Daily Journal, said he had delayed an announcement because he wanted to avoid any conflict with this year's state elections. Qualifying deadline for next year's Senate race is Jan. 11, with party primaries in March.

In a Nov. 1, 2006, interview with the Daily Journal's editorial board, Cochran said he would decide in late 2007 about running again. He said then that which party controls the Senate could influence his decision.

Recently, rumors have circulated that Cochran might not seek re-election.

  1. What do you think about the prospects of a Gene Taylor run? Would Democrats be able to keep District 4 if he made a go for it?

  2. I've spoken with Gene and he is a very happy subcommittee chair.

    He will not run.

If the seat were to be open Mike Moore could win it. (I think he still lives in Jackson County)

  3. Interesting. I don't see Bennie Thompson running, either, given his Homeland Security gig and the possibility of actually becoming house speaker if he hangs in a little longer.

Who do you see making a run for it? I've seen Mike Moore give up possible runs so many times that I'm beginning to think he's decided to leave politics.

  4. Amy Tuck will be the Republican if she wants it.

The Democrat will be Moore or former Congressman Shows I do believe.

(Again, this only happens if Cochran doesn't run)
