Senate Races I'm Watching (and perhaps you'd like to, too)

STATE SENATE

(29) David Blount (D) vs. Richard White (R) inc. Blount wins close race.

(43) Shannon Walley (R) inc. vs. Tommy Dickerson (D)
- In 99 Dickerson ran as a Democrat and won./ In 03 he ran as a Republican and lost to Walley running as a Democrat. Walley switched parties and now is running for re-election as a Republican facing Dickerson running as a Democrat who will likely win.
To recap: Dickerson ('99D -> '03R -> '07D) Walley ('03D -> 07'R) Wierd, right?

(41) Gerald Buffington (D) vs. Joey Fillingane (R) inc. Buffington wins.

(18) Gloria Williamson (D) inc. vs. Giles Ward (R) Williamson wins close race.

(52) Jim Wilson (D) vs. Tommy Moffett (R) inc. Race will be closer than expected.

  3. I don't know the senate district number, but Democrat Bill Stone will unseat Ralph Doxey in the one that covers Marshall, Benton, and Tippah. Doxey was elected as a Democrat but switched parties. Stone is the current mayor of Ashland.

    The demographics alone favor Stone. This senate district is 1 of 2 in Mississippi that is majority white and went in favor of John Kerry in 2004. The only way Doxey wins is because he's Doxey. Otherwise, this race gets the Dems to a even-split state senate.

  4. Two corrections..the Senate race between Fillingane and Buffington is District 41, not 46. Secondly, when was Joey Fillingane ever a Democrat? He ran for House 101 in 1999 and 2003 as a Republican and for the Senate this year as one (the special election last year was nonpartisan). Joey for years has been active in the Lamar County GOP.

    I'm curious..what is your basis from predicting Fillingane's defeat..after his overwhelming victory to the post just one year ago?

  6. I think he'll win based on what I've seen and heard though I'll admit I've seen no polling. Fillingane could still win, but I think Buffington will pull it out.

    (...but I've been wrong before) :)

  7. Politico... if you haven't realized by reading anything by Leek yet, his "basis" for anything is what his youthful self would most like to happen.

    Pretty suavy politico, huh?

  8. I hope you're right about David Blount...his race is looking good...though only 30 something % of the precincts are reporting... *prays*
