I will be posting the results of the LA-06 special election tonight in this main post, we can chat in the replies. Democrat Don Cazayoux looks to make the Democrats two for two so far this special election season. Remember we won Hastert's seat in IL-14 earlier this year. Polls close at 8:00 PM CST.

CQ Politics on the MS-01 race

CQ Politics, a wing of subscription based Congressional Quarterly, just posted an article on the MS-01 race. CQ Politics has a lot of free content online that does not require a subscription. So you don't need a subscription to view this article.

The effort by Davis and his Republican backers to push past Childers in the runoff are based on their attempts to “nationalize” the race. They are seeking to erode Childers’ claims of conservative credentials by associating him with more liberal national Democratic Party leaders — a tack being echoed in the Louisiana House special election contest between state Rep. Don Cazayoux, who also is running as a conservative-leaning Democrat, and Republican former state Rep. Woody Jenkins.

and I found this take interesting, although I am not sure I agree with it

Analysts have said it is possible that a kind word from Obama — who is seeking to become the nation’s first African-American president — could help Childers at the polls May 13 by increasing turnout among blacks who make up more than a quarter of district voters and typically vote overwhelmingly Democratic. But Childers, who is casting himself as a “pro-life” and “pro-gun” conservative, has to walk a fine line in a district that overall leans strongly to the right, as Republicans are basing their campaign against him on an allusion that he will side with liberal Democrats should he go to Washington.

Update: I just got word that The Rev. Wright, Obama Ad has been pulled in LA-06. I am waiting to find out if it has been pulled here or not.

Correction according to TPM it was a Freedom Watch ad accusing Cazayoux of wanting to give benefits to illegal immigrants, which was totally false. The CBS affiliate for Baton Rouge refused to show it for its lack of evidence.

Swing State

MS-01: The big event. Democratic Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers has waged a startlingly strong campaign for the open seat left behind earlier this year when Roger Wicker was appointed to the Senate. Despite running in an R+10 district and being at a financial disadvantage, Childers edged GOP candidate and Southaven Mayor Greg Davis by a 49%-46% margin in the April 22 special primary election. Davis and the NRCC have fought back hard, trying to tie Childers to Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama. But the DCCC is playing to win, and they've invested a whopping $1.1 million in this race. This one should be close.

LA-06: Democratic state Rep. Don Cazayoux will square off with "newspaper editor" Woody Jenkins to fill the open seat of ex-Rep. Richard Baker. In this hotly contested race, Democrats have been blessed with the better candidate, stellar fundraising, and favorable polls. However, the NRCC and their allies have dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars on ads painting Cazayoux as a serial tax raiser and a Barack Obama disciple.

We'll find out on Saturday night if any of these attacks have made an impact. The most recent poll, though, shows Cazayoux with a nine point lead. SSP will be liveblogging the results, so be sure to check with us then. There will also be a special election to replace Bobby Jindal in LA-01, but this one should be a solid lock for the GOP.

LA-06: Cazayoux looks to turn red district blue

Normally it is all Mississippi politics here, but we are going to step out and talk about one in Louisiana. LA-06, an R+6.5 district, is the congressional district that contains Baton Rouge. Like MS-01, LA-06 should be a cakewalk for the Republicans. Bush carried LA-06 with 58.9% of the vote in 2004. This is the first of two big opportunities to lay claim to ruby red districts in the supposed "backyard" of the GOP, with of course MS-01 being the other.

Incumbent Richard Baker took a lucrative position with a hedge fun, hence we are having a special election.

Just like MS-01 the Democrat challenger is doing very well. State Rep. Don Cazayoux is a ahead of Republican Woody Jenkins by 9 points according to a new poll just released by SurveyUSA.
