New Rasmussen MS-PRES poll

Since the economic meltdown a few weeks ago, Obama's numbers have steadily moved up across the country. New polling for Mississippi shows Senator Obama is making headway down here in Mississippi. This is the first poll released after the debate in Oxford.

What is interesting is the high favorability numbers for Sarah Palin. She has dropped to around -10 nationally, but remains popular as ever in Mississippi with a rating of +31. So far Mississippians don't care about her embarrassing lack of knowledge. Did we not just try eight years with a likable guy who had an embarrassing lack of knowledge?

Rasmussen:

President-MS (last Rasmussen number from August)
Obama --- 44 (41)
McCain -- 52 (54)
MoE 4.5%

One other item of note. One of the questions asked was:

7. What is more important, creating economic growth or reducing the income gap between rich and poor?

62% Creating economic growth
30% Reducing the gap between rich and poor
8% Not sure
I find that an an amazing response from the poorest state in the union. Especially with the top 1% taking the highest percentage of pre-tax income since 1929 (remember what happened that year.)

  1. What is the income inequality in MS relative to the rest of the country?

My guess is that it is much less than places like NY or CA.

If so, it makes sense to prefer growth to redistribution. Not that that justifies voting Republican, we just need to take ownership of that economic development talking point.

  2. Mike, you are correst when looking at it ona state by stae basis. But nationally we have a large paortion of the bottom end of the spectrun right here in Mississippi.

I think the reason for the answer is the success the GOP has had in "educating" the masses to their talking points. I talk to people all the time who rattle off terms like small government or economic growth, but really have no idea what that means to them.

  3. I suspect the positive numbers for Palin here are related to her right-wing fundagelical views with regard to abortion and gun control. Race may have something to do with it as well but I prefer to think not.
