Observation

I spent the better part of last week at the Neshoba County Fair. One of the things that struck me was the dearth of John McCain signs. As a matter of fact, I didn't see a single one.

I guess Republicans really do hate the guy.

  1. I saw several, but nowhere near the number of Wicker or Harper signs.

While I remember a few inside (predominantly around the square), most were outside on the approaches to the fair.

But you are right, there was little enthusiasm about him. You could tell that by the way so many speakers spoke AGAINST Obama and not necessarily FOR McCain. That's a striking difference from four years ago when it was Bush and Kerry.

  2. I saw a few on the roads approaching the Fair- most notably the folk art-y "Vote For John McCain" painted inside an enormous mural of an American flag on a cinderblock wall just outside of Sunrise, but I never saw any inside the Fair, including the around the Square, where I found their absence rather conspicuous.

I'm not definitively say there were none- but I never saw one.

  3. I was riding through Belhaven this weekend and made an observation myself. Some wingnut had a Roger Wicker sign in his front yard, which happened to be directly accros the street from the Belhaven College campus. His yard was rolled in supreme fashion. There was toilet paper for days. I am not endorsing this type of action, but I did find humor in the Belhaven College way to show their political opposition to Roger Wicker.

  4. I paid a visit to the fair as well. McCain had more signs than Musgrove. You would think since Musgrove is running such a tight race would at least have more signs than McCain.

  5. Were we at the same Fair? Everytime someone mentioned John McCain the crowd went wild. The Fair is full of conservative Democrats that love McCain's maverick style more than Republicans. And while there were a number of McCain signs on the way to the Fair, around the square, and up on polls, there were not as many as those who are actually in competitive races. I'm sure if the place was swamped with signs, you'd say it is an indication of how hard the McCain Campaign is working in a state where they shouldn't have to. I think the appropriate level of signs shows the McCain campaign is busy contesting other states, not ones like Mississippi where Obama can not win.

  6. I bet with all that youthful enthusiasm for Barack Obama his signs must have been everywhere. I think he really has a shot in Mississippi this year.

  7. I remember a few Musgrove signs. Admittedly, not many, especially compared to the veritable avalanche of Wicker paraphernalia. But one that springs to mind is the big Musgrove one on the Rhea's (sp?) cabin overlooking the midway (behind the Penn's trailer and the airbrush booth.

But I never saw any McCain signs. That's not entirely true- I saw somebody carrying a stack of them into a cabin first weekend, but I never saw any displayed. I never saw any on poles, and I never saw any anywhere around the square. And I looked, because I thought it was strange that I didn't see any. They were quite conspicuous in their absence.

And I don't buy that "competitive races" nonsense, as the place was practically flooded with Barbour signs two years ago and Bush/Cheney signs 4 years ago.

I mentioned this to one Republican pol I know who remarked he noticed it, too, and said it was more the fault of the campaign than any lack of enthusiasm on the part of the Fair-goers.

Which made a lot of sense, considering the bumbling slipshod campaign he's run so far.

But I never saw any. If anybody has a photo of the FG with a McCain sign displayed- send it on. I know there had to have been some *somewhere*, but I never saw any.
