After some speculation that he might opt for a run for Senate, Charlie Ross officially announced today that he is a Republican candidate for the seat left open by retiring Representative Chip Pickering.
"It is critical that our next congressman have a proven record of fighting for conservative values and accomplishing goals," Ross said. "My record in the State Senate clearly shows I can do this."
CHARLIE ROSS ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR MISSISSIPPI'S THIRD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
JACKSON, Miss. - Charlie Ross, an eleven-year veteran leader in the Mississippi Legislature, announced his candidacy for Mississippi's Third Congressional District seat today.
"It is critical that our next congressman have a proven record of fighting for conservative values and accomplishing goals," Ross said. "My record in the State Senate clearly shows I can do this."
Ross has been widely recognized for his achievements in both the Mississippi House and Senate. He led efforts to balance the State's budget and pass landmark legislation. His comprehensive tort reform package was hailed by the Wall Street Journal as a "model for the nation." Ross also wrote common-sense measures like the Castle Doctrine, which protects the right of every Mississippian to defend their home and protect their family.
In 2007, Ross was recognized as the Legislator of the Year by the American Legislative Exchange Council, awarded the Legislative Achievement Award by the United States Chamber of Commerce, and presented the Charles Dick Medal of Merit by the National Guard Association of the United States.
Ross' campaign will reflect the same conservative beliefs he has consistently supported in the Mississippi Legislature. "I will work to ensure that our nation maintains a strong military, defends our borders against illegal immigrants, protects the unborn, secures our individual Second Amendment rights and improves the environment for private businesses so they may flourish," said Ross.
Ross is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. He is a partner at the Jackson law firm of Wise, Carter, Child & Caraway, P.A. Ross, a Webster County native, lives in Brandon and is married to the former Sharon Ray. They have three sons, Andy, David, and Steven.
Sharon and I hope that each of you had a happy and blessed Thanksgiving and enjoy the upcoming holiday season with your family.
Several weeks ago when Congressman Chip Pickering announced he would not seek re-election in 2008, I reached out to friends and supporters to get your thoughts on my running for his seat. Sharon and I received responses from many of you and they were overwhelmingly in support of my seeking the Third Congressional District seat.
After prayerful consideration, we have decided that I am going to run for Congress. We believe that I will be able to use the experience from my military career, law practice and service in the state legislature to serve the people of Mississippi.
The accomplishments of the last four years show what a dramatic difference can be made when we fight for our conservative values. Working alongside Governor Barbour, I am proud to have been a leader in balancing our budget and passing landmark legislation. Our comprehensive tort reform package was hailed by the Wall Street Journal as a "model for the nation" and we passed measures like the Castle Doctrine which ensures the right of every Mississippian to defend their home and protect their family.
I want to bring these same types of conservative values to Washington on behalf of the Third Congressional District of Mississippi. Conservative beliefs are good for Mississippi and good for our country. They include a strong military, preserving the rule of law by protecting our borders against illegal immigrants, protecting the unborn, protecting our Second Amendment rights and creating an environment where private business and entrepreneurship can flourish.
We are all witness to the intense battle on Capitol Hill over conservative policies. Many want to take our country in a different direction. For this reason it is critical that our next congressman has a proven record of fighting for conservative values and accomplishing goals. My record in the State Senate clearly shows I can do this.
The Republican primary for the Third Congressional District seat is Tuesday, March 11, 2008, just three short months away. There is no time to waste. My staff is contacting people, raising resources and planning a successful campaign.
We hope that each of you will play a part in my campaign. I need your help whether it is financial support, volunteering your time and most importantly speaking to your family, friends, co-workers and fellow churchgoers and encouraging them to support me on March 11, 2008. Despite all the money that is spent on politics, it is still true in Mississippi that the best political advertisement is a personal recommendation from a friend.
Sharon and I hope we can count on your support. Please visit my campaign website and let us know how you are willing to help.
My family and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I do not not like his web site's focus on immigration. When did this become a hot issue in friggin' Mississippi? We're not exactly a border town over here.
Most of the Republican ideas have so clearly failed and are no longer popular.
Asking a Republican politician to like immigrants is like asking Rush Limbaugh to stop being a hypocrite. You really shouldn't expect it to happen often.
