Eaves Inspires at Boys State

At the annual Boys State program put on by the Mississippi Chapter of the American Legion, the young men were happy to hear John Arthur Eaves speak. He instructed them to believe in their own self worth and that honesty is necessary in good government. He reinforced his belief in the value of anyone's ideas by asking the students what they thought were possible solutions for today's problems.

But he told the boys he wasn't afraid to dream big himself.

"When I was on the campus of Yale University, everyone there was walking around with a laptop computer," he said. "I dream that for the high schools of Mississippi. I want to see every student in every classroom working off a laptop."

In closing, he promised the group their voices would be heard in Jackson.

  2. Our kids don't have laptops in Alabama either, although I think we spend somewhat more per child than you folks do. Educators of my acquaintance complain bitterly that a great deal of money is spent on administration, not on things that directly touch the students.

Sounds like a good goal, though. Aim for the stars.
