I went and saw the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie last night and saw a couple things I thought were funny and related to Mississippi.
----
In one scene (I promise this includes no spoilers) Davy Jones is found to be standing in pretty much a bucket of water (on land) so that he can be a part of a meeting. This little detail must have been written in when the writers decided that "oops" Davy Jones isn't able to leave the sea.
This brought to my mind the many things that Casinos have done in Mississippi during the last decade to build huge structures without supposedly leaving the water (until most recently).
Instead of building on land they put down pilings and secured the barges with far more than simple chains. They are not meant to go anywhere.
I also recall the story of one of the Mississippi River casinos building a canal to a pond to bring a barge into it.
When there is money to be made in a movie or in the business of gambling, there will always be a loophole.
----
Elsewhere we find a group of ragtag pirates from all over who came together to take on the East India Trading Company and an armada of the British fleet.
As they joined into a cohesive group to protect piracy from the oppressive Lord Cutler Beckett who is gaining control in more and stranger places, I thought of our own Democratic Party and our own "Lord Beckett" in the form of Haley Barbour.
Democrats are coming together to fight for our shared quality of life and the future of all Mississippians over the greed of the East India Trading Companies of our time.
