Writing on his blog today he stated that:
My Sunday, July 8 column — written on Friday, July 6 — blasted the state Democratic Party for failing to denounce the Ike Brown debacle in Noxubee County.
By Sunday, Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Dowdy told one of our reporters that he wants Brown to resign as chairman of Noxubee County's executive committee because of the ruling by U.S. District Judge Tom Lee that Brown and the Noxubee County Democratic Executive Committee discriminated against white voters and white candidates.
There are several things wrong with this.
1. Democratic State party officals have denounced Ike Brown and even called for his removal.
2. Wayne Dowdy did not wait to respond "by Sunday," he actually called for his removal 2 days earlier. Ike Brown responds Friday to Dowdy's statement which means that Dowdy's statement had to have been before the response. (Anyone in there Sid?)
3. Salter's column Sunday (two days AFTER Democratic State Party Chair Wayne Dowdy called for Ike Brown's removal) wrote that no prominent state Democrats had denounced him. How much more prominent of a Democrat do you want Mr. Salter, really?
Salter states in his defense that he wrote the column Friday for the Sunday edition of the Clarion Ledger, therefore before he knew of Dowdy's statement. Two full days lapsed between the statement and publication though and the Clarion Ledger's own Perspectives Editor didn't know. You'd think he would read his own paper where political reporter Natalie Chandler mentioned Dowdy's comment in an article published in the Saturday edition. In an era of computers and easy corrections all he had to do was a quick re-write or make a phone call. Instead he chose to attack the Democratic party with a charge that is and remains without merit.
In covering up his partisan tracks Sid Salter leaves the question: Is he simply biased against the state Democratic Party or is he also sloppy?
Update 7/11/2007:
Sid Salter responds to some of my concerns here in the comments of his blog. Here is his strongest excerpt in his defense: (It's actually quite reasonable)
But a few facts. The C-L Sunday "Perspective" section containing my column, along with the "Southern Style" section, are preprint sections with a deadline of Thursday at 6 p.m. The section actually prints in the wee hours on Friday morning and then awaits insertion into the Sunday C-L. That's necessary because of the sheer size of the Sunday paper. It's a common practice at large daily
newspapers.
This answers point three and maybe point one.
thanks for putting this up there. Updated my Ike Brown post on my blog with the CL story and your post.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteSid Salter looks extremely foolish at this juncture.
ReplyDeleteHow about Sid Salter, another worthless mainstream media idiot lazy a$$?
ReplyDeleteI can believe the deadline issue. You go to large cities and the Sunday paper comes out on Sat afternoon.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the section of the paper that has real estate, perspective, ads etc is given to the carriers on Saturday where as the news portion is given to them on Sunday so I can believe him on the deadline. Its printed on Friday and given to carriers at 3 AM on saturday morning.
Might be a little bit of an apology time.
Today's CL editorial calls for Brown's removal btw.
ReplyDeleteActually, I've been familar with Mr. Brown's work for 20 years or more and I can attest to the fact that during all that time he has engaged in the politics of race. Which, while I disgreed with his methods, I agreed with his cause. His methods were to run and win as many Black candidates as possible at all costs, which included branding all White candidates and their supporters as racist (I disgreed with). His cause, however, was a just cause. Noxubee County was 70 percent Black with not one Black official - NOT ONE - in the courthouse. His cause was just - I feel - because it started out being for proprtionate representation.
ReplyDeleteMy problem wih Mr. Brown is two-fold:
#1 - His Machiavellian persona, formed in the heat and oppresson of Noxubee County politics, worked so well, he took his show on the road. Some counties took to his politics. Some rejected them outright. During the State Democatic Party turmoil of the 1990's Mr. Brown slipped into a void, firmly entrenched himself. and now the Democats have a mess on their hands in the form of one Mr. Ike Brown.
#2 -Mr. Brown didn't stop at the politics of race, he morphed his tactics into a racist agenda.
Note Republican Lt. Gov. candidate Charlie Ross' comment at the MPA convention: "The church door of the Republican Party is open to everyone."
Note Democratic Party Lt. Gov. candidate Jamie Franks in response to a question about appointing Senate committee chairmen, who said chairmen under his leadership would "Look like Mississippi..Democrat and Republican ...Black and White."
It sounds to me like Sid Salter made some very succint points about Mr. Brown, only ..AND about Mississippi Democrats ONLY if they fail to deal with Mr. Brown and his racist politics.
Just read his letter. It explains him perfectly.
