I AM A DEMOCRAT BECAUSE I AM A CHRISTIAN
As I talk with people from across the great state of Mississippi, everywhere I go folks ask me, “How are you a Christian and a Democrat?” I answer that I am a Democrat because I am a Christian.
Political parties are worldly creations, and so they will never be perfect. But I believe the Democratic Party understands that we are at our best when we work together for the common good. We are a party that has always invested in people. As Jesus teaches in Matthew 25:45 we must care for the least among us, for “when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.”
I believe that every life is sacred, and that being pro-life means protecting children before and after they’re born. I will work to bring an end to abortions in this state, but this past year Mississippi became the state with the highest infant mortality rate in the nation. As a pro-life candidate, that is simply unacceptable to me.
I believe we should provide health care for all of God’s people. I have a plan called KidCare that will start by providing health care coverage for every child in Mississippi. It’s affordable, and would save the state money in the long run.
And when Jesus threw the moneychangers out of the temple, I believe he set an example we should follow today. It is the moneychangers of big oil, big tobacco, and big insurance that have held our state back for far too long. As Governor I’ll serve none but my Creator and the people, not the special interests.
It is hubris for any party to claim to be God’s party, and none ever will be. We must all walk together as Democrats, Republicans, and independents to truly create a new day for Mississippi.
But for me, I am a Democrat because I am a Christian.
This is excellent and the sentiments capture in a nutshell much of what makes me a Democrat. We have to take care of each other and realize that we are all stronger when we work together. The cult of individualism poisons our country. We must bring it back to a more Christian home where we take on our God given responsibility and help all people.
That gave me chills! That is the reason I did and will vote for John Eaves. Mississippi should feel honored to have such a person running for office
ReplyDeleteSince the vast majority of Mississippians are Christians, I imagine Eaves' message will resonate well. However, we have to remember that not everyone is a Christian. In true Democratic tradition, there is nothing in Eaves' remarks that is offensive to non Christians. However, your remark "We must bring it (our country) back to a more Christian home." is offensive. We are not a Christian country. We are a country founded on religious freedom - including the freedom not to be a Christian.
ReplyDeleteCasey Ann, I understand you point.
ReplyDeleteI would not have the country be dominated by one religious group or another or have one groups views imposed legislatively. I hope that is clear enough.
I personally think we all do better when more people act like Christ and in turn the truest definition of Christians.
A quibble; our nation wasn't exactly formed on religious freedom. It was formed by folks who were persecuted elsewhere coming and doing much of the same here. Colonies (and I believe early states) had state supported Denominations.
We are and have been very much a Christian country.
So, Republicans are heartless and cannot be born-again Christians?
ReplyDeleteWhat about the National Liberals who support gay marriage, abortion--and partial birth abortion--, embryonic stem cell research, taking "under God" out of the Constitution, and so many other un-Christian things?? Why does John Arthur Eaves choose to align himself with a party who supports all the things above?
"So, Republicans are heartless and cannot be born-again Christians?"
ReplyDeleteAgain, I'm not sure what you are responding to.
Eaves choses the party bases on which is serving the people the best overall. He admits that no political party is perfect and politics is a dirty business, but I'll repeat what he said here:
'Political parties are worldly creations, and so they will never be perfect. But I believe the Democratic Party understands that we are at our best when we work together for the common good. We are a party that has always invested in people. As Jesus teaches in Matthew 25:45 we must care for the least among us, for “when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.”'
I'm not completely comfortable with either national party and if you are then you may need to have your head examined. They both have major faults. I see the Democrats as having quite a few more redeeming qualities overall though.
