Breaking News: SCHIP

House fails to override Bush's veto of SCHIP. The vote was 273-156, which was 9 votes short. Congressman Taylor was one of only two Democrats to vote with the President and against our children. How very sad! Not surprisingly, there is nothing on his website about it. I'm sure we'll see some statements in the local press.

  1. That hurts. I'm sure going to tell him next time I see him. That even some Republicans got this one right and he didn't is upsetting.

  2. I can see the John Arthur Eaves response already. Eaves is fighting for S-CHIP and Taylor does this?! I bet Eaves will say something like 'What have Barbour and his moneychanger friends promised Gene Taylor? The time for special deals for friends and family is over.'

Then Democratic Chairman Wayne Dowdy will agree, adding that Gene Taylor's vote shows 'that John Eaves has the momentum.'

    Pardon the parody.

  3. I just don't understand it - why would Gene Taylor a "Democrat" vote against expanding childrens healthcare? Maybe it is time for him to run as what he really is...a Republic that has voted yes on all war spending!

Maybe he realized the bill was crap and unfair to Mississippians. Imagine that, somebody reading a bill and bucking the party line because they didn't agree with it. That is what makes Gene Taylor such an exception, he isn't intimidated by bullies.

  5. What the hell is wrong with Taylor? I've disagreed with him before over gay marriage, and I was willing to simply shake my head in amazement when he cited his religious beliefs as his rationale. But this one is really too much. How is expanding health care for children from working families similarly controversial? With all the money we're wasting in Iraq, we can't take care of our own kids?

  6. Reasonably Prudent Person seems to be neither reasonable nor prudent. If s/he had read the bill, it would have been obvious the bill provided significant benefits to Mississippians. I don't know why Taylor voted against it, but it definitely wasn't because it was unfair to Mississippians.

If you would like to summarize the bill, please do so, but refrain from using a website that gives talking points to Democrats as assistance.
