Clarion Ledger Article On Jobs

The Clarion Ledger:
Eaves, a trial lawyer from Jackson, countered in an interview: ‘The governor likes to take credit for jobs, but just because he cuts a ribbon don't mean he brought the business. If he's going to take credit for every job that comes to Mississippi, he needs to take credit for every one that's lost, too.’ … In August, the national unemployment rate was 4.6 percent and Mississippi's was 5.9 percent. Only two states were worse off than Mississippi. Alaska's jobless rate was 6.3 percent and Michigan's was 7.4 percent.

It's always been odd to me when politicians took credit for jobs. People create jobs, small businesses create jobs, big businesses consolidate jobs, Governor's don't create jobs (unless they are government jobs).

  1. I agree, but jobs don't appear out of thin air either. It takes teamwork by leaders to get those jobs. Governor Barbour has done his fare share of work in lobbying for Mississippi. Dennis Cuneo talks about Haley and how he was always pushing for Toyota to look in Mississippi. Dennis said if it wasnt for Haley's lobbying skills and leadership, Toyota would of gone else where. Governor Barbour talks about teamwork and he knows one man cannot do it alone and he always talks about how teamwork and leadership go hand in hand.

  2. I think we ought to be looking for the next Viking Corporation rather than the next Japanese company.

Let's invest in companies that keep their profits here.

  3. Beggars can’t be choosers John. We have the highest unemployment rate in the nation. I think we should take every opportunity for a sound investment in any company that will provide jobs. We need to get Mississippi working and then target the home grown jobs.

  4. Well "the beggars" of Mississippi bribed them millions of dollars. Why don't we expand business here?

It would take innovation, but that's what we need.
