Their post left the impression that we had the story wrong and that led us to question our information until we called the MPA the next morning and were told that we were right. For the first time in decades the format would not be a debate, instead it would consist of a forum.
Jack Rhea Tannehill, a member of the MPA, writes on Barbour's demands today in the Clarion Ledger:
The members of the Mississippi Press Association invited the two principal gubernatorial candidates to come and participate in a forum at our recent convention in Biloxi.
This year both Gov. Haley Barbour and his main rival, John Arthur Eaves, accepted; but Barbour, despite being the guest, laid out his own set of ground rules.
Yes, he would be glad to come and take questions. No, he would not appear at the same time as Eaves.
The Clarion Ledger Article
John,
ReplyDeleteSoooo... let me get this straight... Because I want to be sure of your EXACT position...
So if 2 candidates for the same seat are to be at the same event at the same time, and ONE candidate follows the rules but another does not even show up at the same and correct (and publically announced) time, then the one who DIDNT comply is a coward?
I just want to be sure that is exactly what you are saying...
Is it?

Eaves agreed to a debate.

Barbour refused to meet in a debate.

Barbour is the coward.
Hey everett dutschke - just in case you did not understand what john was saying, let me spell it out for you again: Eaves agreed to a debate, Barbour refused to debate Eaves, Barbour is a COWARD. I hope this clears things up for ya, friend.
ReplyDeleteWhat were the terms of the debate? Format? That could make a difference.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to ask you hyper-partisan people to do something I dont think you are capable of doing...
Lets leave the candidates names out for a minute... pretend you have no idea who they are...
Was this set up as a DEBATE or as a FORUM...?
That is the important distinction...
There was an event JUST like that that I personally know of where ONE candidate (doesnt matter who) agreed to follow the rules, and then did not comply (which meant NOT showing up when agreed)...
It wasnt a debate YET, but a well publicized event...
Try to forget WHO the candidates are for a moment, if you can... focus on the issue... what do you REALLY think about it (as a forum) and tell me if this changes your mind or not...

The event was set up as a DEBATE every time, every 4 years for decades. The Eaves campaign was notified by letter that the event was NO LONGER a debate as previously understood and instead would be a forum where the candidates would not appear at the same time or interact.
ReplyDeleteThe Lt. Governor's candidates still had a debate as was usual.
The truth is (as admitted by a MPA member) that Barbour refused to face Eaves in a debate at the MPA.
Or the everett dutschke version...

The truth is (as admitted by a MPA member) that CANDIDATE A refused to face CANDIDATE B in a debate at the MPA.
