Obama was endorsed today by Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.
"Barack Obama had the judgment to oppose the war in Iraq from the start," Thompson in a statement, "and he will restore America's standing around the world and secure our homeland by giving our first responers the equipment and support they need."
This is the 16th red-state endorsement Obama has received, about 35 percent of his total endorsements. Thompson is African American, and blacks in Mississippi make up an estimated 37% of the total population. Mississippi holds its primary on March 11 and has 33 pledged delegates (40 total).
That's cool. I like Obama.
Come on, John. That is NOT cool. Bennie should know this race is really no longer about Iraq and won't be come November."It's the economy, stupid!" John Edwards is the candidate for Dem. nomination who is actually addressing the DOMESTIC issues we face--especially in Mississippi. Bennie's just proud to be the Homeland Security (Boondoggle unnecessary bureaucracy) mouthpiece in the House.

ReplyDelete84 percent of Americans say you're wrong.
If McCain is the candidate the war is THE ISSUE.
ReplyDeleteThe economy is important and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or John Edwards would all do an excellent job.
Being chairman of the Homeland Security Committee is important and Representative Thompson should be proud of that accomplishment.

I feel the way about Obama that most Ron Paul fanatics feel about Ron Paul. I can't think of any presidential election in my lifetime where I would be more bummed out if my candidate didn't get the nomination. Even in 2004, my response when Kerry beat Dean was "meh."
ReplyDeleteThe perfection that is Obama was demonstrated in last night's debate, when the moderator asked each candidate why they thought MLK would endorse them. Edwards described his passion for poverty relief and commitment to equality. Obama said "I don't think he would endorse any of us; he'd try to hold us all accountable." That blows me away.
Cheers,
TH
Sorry, Bardwell, but I'm talking about issues that matter most to his constituency and while I don't have numbers from any Delta polling, I'd venture to guess that Homeland Security is not in the forefront of their minds and won't be come November. It's only a guess... My apologies John for over publishing. My login wouldn't accept my password (I thought). While I'm on, was I the only person who was offended by HRC's intro at MLK festivities in acknowledging John Edwards as "A Son of the South?" She made an obvious jab at thee YOUNG African American (ok we know she's beating him up on inexperience) But on Edwards? I think she was telling the rest of the country "Son of the Confederacy." Did it strike anyone else that way or am I hyper sensitive?
ReplyDeleteHead, have you read the letter to JE from MLK III? It's posted on his website. Take a look at what Rev. King's own son says about JE's policy as a reflection of his father's dream. It's quite eloquent.
ReplyDeleteSailor, re: "Son of the South," I didn't see it as a negative thing--I think the argument was more that Dr. King was trying to transform people who looked like John Edwards, and now here's somebody, a white guy no less, who was born in the segregationist South preaching Dr. King's vision--but I can definitely see how one might.
ReplyDeleteI'll read the MLKIII endorsement. Got to say I like Edwards much, much more than I did even a month ago, but there's not a debate I watch where I don't come out of it even more convinced that Obama needs to be our next president than I was coming in.
Edwards almost certainly won't win the nomination, but he may get to decide who will. I doubt either Obama or Clinton will walk away with 2,205 delegates; Edwards will more than likely be the one who decides who the nominee will be. And I would be stunned if he doesn't at the very least play a significant policymaking and cabinet role in the next Democratic administration, assuming a Democrat wins the presidency in November, which is of course what I want to see happen.
