Nolan Mettetal Takes Final Step, Switches Parties

Nolan Mettetal has officially switched parties. All I can say is it's about time.

Miss. senator switching to GOP
Sen. Nolan Mettetal of Sardis told The Clarion-Ledger this morning he is switching his political affiliation to the Republican Party.
A commenter gives their perspective:
This is a sad day for the good people of Panola County. He ran and won on the back of the Democrats, then switched parties. He come around to all the black churches and and song that same old song, and got in and now he switched parties... I think it is a shame!

We told you last May that newly Republican State Senator Nolan Mettetal was a Democrat in Name Only.

In this post we outlined the race between Nolan Mettetal and his Democratic primary opponent Mona Pittman

In this post we outlined why Nolan Mettetal was a Democrat in Name Only

In this post we outlined Mona Pittman's passion for education

The Democrats respond:
“It’s unfortunate that Democrats in Panola and Tate counties who thought they were voting for a Democrat in last year’s state Senate elections now suddenly find themselves without representation for the next four years,” Dowdy said.

“The Mississippi Democratic Party has always welcomed everyone in our organization. To say that conservatives are not welcome is completely untrue.

To say that Mississippi Democrats don't welcome conservatives is laughable. Between John Arthur Eaves, Jamie Franks, Ronnie Musgrove and Gene Taylor it's hard to say that there isn't a place for conservatives in the Mississippi Democratic Party.

  1. We would have had at least one more, but the other Senate DINO Scottie Cuevas was taken out by New Democratic Senator David Baria.

Sen. Mettetal was an old school Democrat. He is a prime example of the party changing.

Mettetal had different views than the party, as you have pointed out.

The parties, instead of embracing change and diverse opinions, have made it difficult for anybody that substantially believes in the party ideology but differs on a few points. The Republicans are just as bad, if not worse, than the Democrats about this. Disagree on one issue (for instance, stem cell research), and it is off to Siberia, and you are labelled a liberal.

Elected moderates, are few and far between. Seems most people elected are complete quacks that drink the party kool-aid because they must get elected.

Maybe Mettetal will feel more at home. Maybe he should have been more honest with the voters. Maybe the Democrats shouldn't have taken him for granted (or not put up an opponent against him). Whatever. The bottom line is that he will vote what he wants, and if the District chooses to bring him home in four, that is that. If he were my Senator, and I voted for him, I would be ringing his phone off the hook on every issue.

  3. If you really want to read something entertaining and enlightening, read the transcripts of the election challenge. I am very very sorry for the people of Panola County. This guy used every possible intimidation trick in the book to keep his seat. His voting record showed his true colors. His record on education was and will continue to be deplorable.

  5. He should have switched BEFORE the election. That would have been the honest thing to do. Pittman would have been a better representative. Hopefully he'll run again and make Mettetal the next Doxy.

  6. I do hope that she (Mona) does run again. I know this race took a lot of time and effort, but I hope she is not discouraged.

She seems to have a genuine passion for helping the people of Mississippi.

  7. I am a voter in Panola county and today was the first I've heard about his change. It takes a lot of arrogance to do this to the people who voted him in. He misrepresented himself and took money for his campaign under false pretenses, in my opinion. He also undermined his Republican opponent. Would he have beaten either of them if he had the honesty and moral integrity to have made that decision before the election?

  8. We were all fooled white black young and old. He denied his intentions to the last. He is/was an arrogant pretentious old southern liar, that made his name and money from the poor and down-trodden. Well that older generation is slowly leaving and you don't have your store to credit us meds so that we feel en gracious to you or your whining family.
