Jackson Councilwoman Robbed at Gunpoint

The problem with crime in Jackson is large and seemingly impossible to ignore.

Just this Saturday afternoon Councilwoman Margaret Barrett-Simon was robbed at gunpoint as she and her husband walked the short distance from their car to their home in the Belhaven area.

Haley Barbour seems to be able to do the impossible. He stands inactive while the city of Jackson, the only large city in Mississippi and the capital, grows increasingly lawless and violent.

    this sucks.
i live in jackson (although on the outskirts) and it baffles me how no one is doing anything about crime...
i love jackson (it's the best city in MS, imo) and i don't want it to descend into lawlessness and violence =(

  2. Why do you blame Haley instead of the person who is IMMEDIATELY responsible for what goes on in this city?

    The Mayor.

    200 officers understrength.
No arrests for drug sales last year.
15000 fewer citations written last year.
Disassociated JPD from Jackson Police Foundation
Hires crooked officials like Bracy and Louis
Keeps custody of young men who repeatedly get in trouble with the law while under his care.
Refuses to turn over crime stats to the media
    Disbands local drug task force

    yet its Haley's fault.

    right.

Yes, Mayor Melton bears much blame. He should not be re-elected AND should he somehow manage to retain the nomination next time I would happily support even a Republican opponent.

Unfortunateley, one man does not often solve (or create) all of the problems of a major city.

In any state the governor is graded based on the sucess of its cities and I don't think it can be argued that Jackson has gotten better.

Also the point still stands that he doesn't appear to spend much time or effort attempting to improve Jackson either.

  4. What Mr. Barbour could do that might be productive is to convene a summit or panel, invite people from Jackson's business community, neighborhood groups, civic groups, the faith-based groups, etc. to come together and work on possible solutions to the Capital's crime problems. In order to do this, you must have LEADERSHIP, and I think that given the problems in Jackson, it needs to come from the top!

  5. when Melton is running around saying there is "corruption at the highest levels" don't be surprised if no one raises a finger to help him. Especially when he turns on people like Ben Allen and repeatedly lies to them and insults them to their faces.

If Barbour was a Melton supporter, he wouldn't have fired from from MBN. I suspect that if this goes on much longer, Barbour will step in to some degree.

  6. Yeah, Frank is whack.

Can you impeach a mayor? I know he was indicted but that didn't go through...
