Childers, who labels himself a conservative Democrat, has stressed the importance of voting against trade deals that cost American jobs. He is a strong supporter of public education, saying it's time for the nation, as a whole, to provide schools with the materials and support they need. That is important in a district where only 65 percent of teens graduate from high school and only 10 percent of the population has a college degree.
As for Iraq, Childers believes it is time to bring the troops home "honorably, safely and soon," while providing them with material support until that happens. He recently told this newspaper's editorial board that it is time to bring the troops home and spend the money we are sending to Iraq on projects in the United States...
...Over the years, however, this editorial board always has looked favorably at candidates who have shown a degree of political independence. Davis has given no indication that he'll stray far from the Bush administration's stand on important issues, including the war in Iraq. That fact should not be lost on 1st District voters, especially when opinion polls are showing that the majority of citizens believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.
As for the way the race has been conducted, we have to say that both candidates' advertising campaigns have been sorry spectacles. Davis' and the Republican Party's efforts to tie Childers to Barack Obama and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, for example, border on race-baiting.

Commercial Appeal endorses Childers
Despite being the mayor of South Memphis, er... Southaven, Greg Davis was unable to secure the endorsement of the Memphis paper the Commercial Appeal. Besides Freedom's Watch, George W. Bush, and Dick Cheney has Greg Davis received any major endorsements? (no we are not counting the CCC). Childers has now been endorsed by the newspapers in the three largest media markets. The Daily Journal, Commercial Dispatch, and the Commercial Appeal all agree it is time for change, and Travis Childers is the candidate of change.

Those would be all three of the big papers in the district right?
ReplyDeleteIf so he's pulled a trifecta.
I am scared to say anything but let's GOTV. But yes all 3 biggies endorsed Childers, things are lining up his way. I am sending my best wishes to all who are woking hard for Travis right now.
ReplyDeleteIt can't hurt to have the biggest paper in Davis's media market endorsing his opponent. It would be like the Daily Journal endorsing Davis, bad news.
We've deleted 3 comments by "politician" because they are libelous towards Greg Davis. As far as we know the things (which I won't repeat) that he is accused of in those comments have nothing to back them up and really shouldn't come up the weekend before an election.
ReplyDeleteWe'd expect such comments to stand at some other Mississippi political sites, but even if we disagree wholeheartedly with a candidate as repulsive politically as Greg Davis it is not helpful to attack him in such a manner. Use your time helping other candidates instead of attempting to anonymously attack another.
Wow I missed that, did someone leave some nasty words about Greg Davis? Keep it clean fellas. We are gonna win this fair and square.
