John McCain and Hurricane Katrina

I was so caught up in the MS-01 special election that I did not post on the John McCain trip to the 9th ward last month. He made sure to throw his buddy George W. Bush under the bus for the absolute failure of the government to aid its own people in their time of crisis. John McCain might have had no idea the poor response was not due to poor government, but lack of government. George W. Bush with the aid of his enablers like John McCain, has stripped our government bare. The only thing left is a bunch of lucrative no-bid contractors left to fill the role once held by government. Haliburton, KBR, etc... all made a fortune off of the disaster in New Orleans. They made so much money that they actually sent people down from the other disaster they were profiteering off of, Iraq.

All that aside, Mississippians need to know where John McCain stood on Katrina when the chips were down. First off let's remember what John McCain was doing on the fateful day of Aug. 29, 2005.

The folks at Mother Jones Blog complied this nice paragraph about Senator McCain's votes surrounding the aftermath of Katrina.

Forty Senators and 100 members of Congress visited New Orleans before he did; he finally got there in March 2006. He voted against establishing a Congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local responses to Katrina in med-September 2005. He repeated that vote in 2006. He voted against allowing up to 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to people affected by the hurricane, and in 2006 voted against appropriating $109 billion in supplemental emergency funding, including $28 billion for hurricane relief.
I would like bring one more ill-advised vote to the forefront.

(Oct 2005) S.AMDT.2033- Voted NO on $3.1B for emergency oil assistance for hurricane-hit areas.

The record is clear on John McCain and Katrina. He can try and distance himself from brother Bush all he wants but remember this is John McCain and George W. Bush.

  1. John McCain can pretend all he wants, but his record is clear.

He has been more than a willful follower of Bush. He has been nearly as much of a disaster and we must not allow him that power.

We need a steady hand, not a hot head.

  2. Both Mississippi Senators voted against it also.

  3. Jeff,
The only thing I have found in the bill you referenced, concerning Katrina, was monies to be spent in a review of the federal govs response. I did not find where this money was to be used in hurricane relief. Please provide me with a link if I am mistaken.

"Vote number 2005-250 $3.1B for emergency oil assistance for hurricane-hit areas
on Oct 5, 2005 regarding bill S.AMDT.2033 to HR 2863 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program appropriation "

Trent did not support it because it was for low-income people. They would rather give the Hurricane releief money to the governor to dole out to his business buddies. We still have hundreds living in temporary housing. But yet the Governor has been praised for doing such a good job. Horse $%#* is what I say.

Here is a Trent Lott quote on the Senate Floor regarding increasing funds for LIHEAP.

“What is it we are not going to give people for free? Is there any limit? Is there any limit to the amount of money?” asked Lott, adding snidely “I thought we were having global warming.”

See he does not want to GIVE poor people anything and even makes a joke out of it. What a jerk.
