Time Magazine says...

Obama's Next Big Challenge

  1. (NOTE: This letter is being sent to all major Barack Obama webgroups in the state of Mississippi, as well as the news/opinion rooms of several major newspapers and TV stations in the state, and the CottonMouth blog. I ask all Barack Obama supporters in Mississippi to join me in this effort to get our superdelegates to declare for the candidate who easily won our state nearly two months ago. Please hit "reply all" if you would like to share your thoughts with many of Mississippi's newspapers and TV stations, as well as our Democratic party leaders. Superdelegate contact info also found below my signature. Thank you for reading.)

    My fellow Mississippians,

It has now been nearly two months since our state went to the polls and displayed its overwhelming support for Senator Barack Obama.

It is now perfectly clear that Senator Obama will be the Democratic party's nominee for President.

And yet, we have three undeclared superdelegates in our state who STILL, as of this writing, have not announced their support for Senator Obama.

    Why?

None of us here need to be reminded of Mississippi's past, nor do we need to be reminded of the way we are often viewed across the nation.

I want to make this clear: I am white and lower/middle class. I am NOT playing "the race card", as it is not mine to play.

That being said...do we really, here in Mississippi, in a state Barack Obama won easily, want our superdelegates to be seen dragging their feet?

Is that any way for our state to be represented? When the accounting comes, and an African-American has become, for the first time in our history, the nominee for President by a major party, do we want it said, again, that "Mississippi was last"? Do we want to be seen, again, as being "behind the curve" in regards to an African-American who has come so far and accomplished so much?

Is that the kind of reputation we want marked down, again, in Mississippi's ledger? Is that the kind of "leadership" we can expect, again, from our Party and from our elected officials?

It is time for a change in America. It is time for a change in Mississippi. It is time for all of us to put the past behind us and move forward, together, into the future.

It is time for us to take our stand. It is time for our superdelegates to declare their support for Senator Barack Obama.

I urge ALL of you: take action. Send emails and make phone calls to our undeclared superdelegates, as listed below. Then PASS THIS EMAIL ON to anyone you know who believes as you do, as we do, that Barack Obama is the best choice for Mississippi and our nation.

The time for indecisiveness and foot-dragging is over. It is time for our Democratic leaders to act. Call upon them to do so, as I am. Contact your local media with letters to the editor or phone calls to your local TV stations, as I am. We are on the verge of an historic occasion, and we simply cannot allow the shadows of our past to dim the brightness of our future.

    Thank you,
    Christopher Carlson
    Laurel, Mississippi
