Cotton Mouth Is Not Going To The Democratic Convention (And Why)

This year the Democratic National Convention has granted bloggers full access. In doing so they allotted one credential per state for a blogger. Mississippi's credential was granted Wednesday to The Natchez Blog

We at Cotton Mouth must disagree with the selection of The Natchez Blog to represent Mississippi's blogging community in Denver. We like and respect Casey Ann who in addition to writing there has posted on Cotton Mouth, but her blog should not have been selected over Cotton Mouth.

Cotton Mouth completed all required web forms and asked questions (which were answered) to make sure we did everything right.

Cotton Mouth has been the only progressive political blog covering Mississippi's politics at the federal, state and local levels since it started May of 2007.  It had more posts than any other progressive Mississippi political blog and had far more original content than any other Mississippi political blog.  That content included original reporting on events, analysis, aggregation, original video, exclusive candidate authored posts and a solid and consistent defense of the Democratic Party of Mississippi.

Here's an original post by new Representative Travis Childers MS-01.

More examples of all can be easily found.

We've had 33 posts so far THIS WEEK.  The Natchez blog has had 24 posts so far THIS YEAR.

We are the only Mississippi blog that is a member of the Liberal Blog Advertising Network and are considered the authority on Mississippi state politics by major blogs like MyDD, OpenLeft, and SwingStateProject.

We've been linked to by multiple newspaper blogs in Mississippi and by blogs around the country for our work.  Several prominent opinion writers have admitted that they check our blog regularly including Sid Salter who's the most syndicated in Mississippi.

Democrats or their staffs who have personally thanked Cotton Mouth in the past include Congressmen Thompson (MS-02) and Childers (MS-01), Attorney General Jim Hood, Ronnie Musgrove and most of the Democratic nominees from 2007 state elections.

As we move forward towards November I believe that it is important for the blog that best assists Travis Childers win re-election to the house and Ronnie Musgrove beat interim Senator Roger Wicker to be given the best platform among Democrats.

We've done extensive work to help both including helping to get their messages out and actively combating attacks on them.  We're the only Mississippi blog that has raised money for them.  We are THE ONLY voice consistently doing so and their success is at least partially reliant on having strong blog support.  The blog chosen for the pool has helped neither.

Here are the requirements as set out by the DNCC:
the applicant’s blog must have been in existence six months prior to requesting credentials and have at least 120 politically related blog posts. Bloggers must submit their daily audience and list their authority based on Technorati stats. Bloggers may also provide examples of posts that make their blog stand out as an effective online organizing tool and/or agent of change.

We believe it is clear that Cotton Mouth is the strongest candidate for the position on these requirements and merits and should have been an easy decision.

Again I would like to point out that we do not hold any ill will toward Casey Ann, but I think she'd agree that Cotton Mouth would be the choice on the merits.

We've been in contact with people who have told us that we were considered for the credential, but were vetoed by someone in Mississippi's Democratic Party. We are attempting to find out who that person is and why they felt we should not represent Mississippi. Any assistance in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I stepped back from the blog, but I did most of the work to get the credential so it upset me to see this happen. I thank Jake for allowing me to post this. Again any help will be appreciated. (John Leek)

  2. JUST GO TO DENVER!
Whoever politically made you not get credentialed, DON'T LET THEM STOP YOU!
I told you months ago that you should go. You just need transportation to and from and a place to stay, the same as if you had received your credential. When you get there it will be more challenging for you without credentials, but maybe you can still get credentialed if you network!
There are still some MS delegate positions open for our June 7th State convention (deadline to file application is nearing) so that popularity contest is still open for you to try.
Dig in! You're a great mind and you can overcome this political setback.
Life is not fair, so make due with the cards you're dealt!
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Kelly Jacobs (KellitaJ@aol.com)

  3. I think you should go as you have definitely been at the forefront of the more liberal blogs in Ms (although i would say NMC at Folo would have you beat if he wanted to go). Having said that, I have a feeling it might have come down to a who you know sort of thing as these things are very political.

  4. I think FOLO is based out of another state (Florida?), but I'm not sure.

    Thanks!

  5. There were a number of "strange" choices by the DNCC.

The blog chosen in New York isn't a Democratic blog. In fact, every NY progressive blog that helped the party raise money got stiffed by the DNCC.

    https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6111449885694140250&postID=1543473428228670423

    The blog owner admits that:

"For a change, I sympathize with the “progressives”. Room 8 is not in existence to do political work (although some of the bloggers here clearly do contracts for their friends or for hire) and is neither "an effective online organizing tool" nor "an agent of change". "

    He goes on to say...

"The DNC seems confused--they put out an APB asking for one kind of blogger, and, at least in NY and NJ, selected quite another, and, even by that criteria, Room 8 seems a strange choice. "

New Jersey and Alabama also had blogs selected that, like this says, are a completely different kind of blogger than they type the requested.

    Good luck to you!!

  6. Blogging is a pretty meritorious endeavor -- people either read the blog or not depending on what you write. That's a nice, clean system. That cleanliness caused me to lose sight of the Political Aspect of the DNCC credential selection process.

Like you, we worked hard on the application, had good stats, submitted posts that we thought showed we were an "agent of change" and "effective organizing tool." No dice. A non-partisan blog that makes no attempt to be an agent of change or organizing tool got the credential. Nice enough blog and they do post regularly, but not 50 State Strategy material.

Y'all wuz robbed, no question. Mississippi isn't the only case, but it's the most egregious I've seen. If you can beg, borrow or steal a credential, you should go to Denver anyway. Otherwise, cultivate good relations with some delegates, etc. and blog the damned thing from Mississippi.

    Success is the best revenge.

  7. It looks like the DNC left it all up the individual states to make the selection in good faith based on their criteria. Most states complied...

  8. Lotus is in Florida. NMC is in Oxford so yes, I would call it a Mississippi blog since their primary focus is Mississippi.

  9. Ahh. Okay. I didn't realize they had two authors. I haven't had a particular interest in trials.

  10. I am the cofounder of Loaded Orygun, a state blog in Oregon funded this year by BlogPac and using the soapblox community "Kos-style" model, up and running overall since Jan 06. We also have done original journalism to go with our opinion and advocacy, and run about 1,000 views a day.

I cannot necessarily fault the selection of the blog that will represent Oregon, but its co-founder is a media consultant with perhaps dozens of local clients within the state party at all levels, including Merkley for Senate.

Loaded Orygun endorsed Steve Novick in April 07, and hasn't wavered. That has not necessarily endeared LO to the state political apparatus.

In a vacuum I wouldn't say anything, but hearing several examples of potential jerry-rigging and favoritism I wanted to at least put my situation out there.

  11. I definitely think that it's possible they let state parties exercise too much control over these decisions.

Time to "primary" whoever this was?

  13. You are completly misrepesenting Kos. Kos did support Reagan, so what. People can't change their opinions's after 25 years? You're argument bacame weak at the point you personally attacked Makos. Obviously you have a grudge. Kos is a rock solid friend of the Democratic party. This blog, Cotton Mouth, is a Democratic blog if you could not tell.

  14. Yeah... The Democratic party is obviously not trying to become an all-white party. Have you seen how we're registering so many voters in EVERY community and how Obama is reaching out to everyone regardless of race as long as they are willing to listen?

  15. Visiting from Pam's House Blend. Good luck with this. I hope it's corrected properly by giving you at least the same access Natchez has received.

I also hope to see them invite bloggers from marginalized communities in great numbers - including those marginalized within the blogosphere.

  16. You can question someone, but to slander them is inappropriate and we don't allow that on this blog no matter who it is directed at.
